03 Aug Spanish researchers are beginning to try olive oil treatment for long-term Covid-19.
A dietary supplement made from olive polyphenols and bitter orange flavonoids, for the treatment of acute consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, also known as long Covid.
The Endothelyx 45 supplement will be prescribed to patients who have passed the acute phase of the disease, but continue to struggle with symptoms such as chronic fatigue, joint pain and memory loss.
The aim of the study is to study the effect of the supplement on endothelial cells, which are located in the inner lining of the arteries and play a key role in the health of the cardiovascular system. It is believed that one of the ways that Covid-19 attacks the body is to cause inflammation and oxidative stress in these cells, which leads to just such symptoms.
Polyphenols are natural biologically active compounds present in fruits, vegetables and other plants, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In recent years, they have been credited with helping prevent the development of certain diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. The clinical trial, which is being conducted by the Regional University Hospital of Malaga in cooperation with the Spanish companies Genosa, Synlab and Solvitae Medical, will last 6 months, and then the drug may be available for sale.
In a separate study conducted by the University Hospital of Jaen, another dietary supplement containing polyphenols from olives is prescribed to patients with mild or moderate symptoms of Covid-19 to study its effectiveness in preventing the progression of the disease to the acute stage.
