Extra virgin olive oil is the most readily available source of antioxidants that help reduce the effects of oxidative stress and therefore reduce the risk and progression of many diseases.
Oxidative or oxidative stress is the cause of all diseases, including cancer, because it is the process of damage to the body’s cells themselves as a result of oxidation. Environmental, physical, and mental stressors cause the production of reactive oxygen species, also known as free radicals. The production of free radicals leads to the fact that the human body is exposed to the pressure of oxidative stress. Too many free radicals cause widespread damage because they” steal ” electrons from other cells, destroying them but stabilizing themselves. This results in an imbalance between the body’s oxidative and antioxidant systems. Antioxidants stabilize free radicals, providing a supply of electrons to stabilize cells. So if we can help the body by providing more antioxidants, it makes sense that oxidative stress is reduced, and therefore organ and tissue damage is also reduced.
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is one of the most studied sources of antioxidants in food. Many studies show that EVOO provides a range of different health benefits, but in many cases the mechanisms are still not fully understood. However, much of the research related to EVOO regarding disease prevention or risk management often attributes reduction of oxidative stress as one of the main mechanisms. That is, it is proven and definitely worth using, because to reduce oxidation means to slow down aging.
