05 Apr The demand for olive oil in Spain has increased due to coronavirus

According to the president of the country’s national agri-food cooperative, olive oil is one of the most sought-after food products in Spain now that the country is facing an unprecedented crisis due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

“Olive oil producers are working around the clock in three shifts at the factory without stopping,” said Angel Villafranca in an interview with El Diario.

According to data released by global research company Nielsen, purchases of olive oil increased by five percent in the last week of February compared to the same period last year, that is, at the time of the outbreak of the pandemic in Spain. Purchases also rose in March, up a few percent from the same period last year.

“We are not only talking about Spain, but also exporting a significant part of our products,” said Villafranca. “In Italy, Spanish trucks continue to circulate and go to warehouses daily.”
